What readers are saying

5/5
"Kate Campo’s Progress Notes is a compelling, emotionally resonant debut that captures the raw, relentless, and deeply human experience of medical training through the eyes of Grace, a newly minted family medicine intern. This novel is as much a character study as it is a window into the high-stakes, high-pressure world of modern medicine. From the opening pages, Campo immerses us in the chaotic rhythms of the hospital, where Grace’s first steps as a doctor are anything but surefooted. The clinical settings—delivery rooms, ICU wards, and emergency bays—are drawn with vivid authenticity."

Progress Notes, though a work of fiction, reads like a vivid recollection of the often overwhelming trials and tribulations of graduate medical education. It brings to life the sudden contrast between life as a medical student with no responsibilities and the enormous responsibilities for life and death that resident doctors take on, especially when faced with many supervising senior doctors who are not very sympathetic or compassionate. I recommend it to all medical students and residents, their loved ones, and those who supervise their work.”
